Battlestar Galactica (2003, 2005–) is a science fiction miniseries which was first broadcast on the Sci Fi Channel on December 8, 2003. Due to stellar ratings, it spawned a one-hour television series co-produced by Sky One and Sci Fi Channel, which premiered its 13-episode first season on October 18, 2004 in the UK and January 14, 2005 in the United States.

Helmed by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine scribe Ronald D. Moore, this "re-imagining" of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica is similarly based around the aftermath of the massacre of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol by the Cylons. The battlestar Galactica, an aging Colonial military vessel, leads the remnants of humanity on a desperate pilgrimage to the fabled thirteenth colony of Earth. The Cylons, having "evolved" from their mechanical/robotic forms into humanoid models, pursue the human fleet tirelessly. Some (allegedly, eight) of the human survivors are in fact Cylon spies, creating a constant threat from within as well as without.

This new Galactica series, unlike the original, features no aliens (actor Edward James Olmos is on record as saying that he will leave the show immediately if they ever start doing alien-of-the-week episodes), and foregoes sci-fi technobabble and random "advanced technology" in favor of realistic modern-day naval terminology, realistic weaponry instead of "ray-guns", and character-driven plots.

Galactica was perhaps best known, at least initially, for its dramatic departures from the original series. The character of Starbuck, originally portrayed by Dirk Benedict (The A-Team), became a female character, and Boomer, originally a secondary character who fulfilled the show's 1970s "wisecracking black man" quotient, was now a primary character portrayed by Grace Park. Colonel Tigh, also originally a black character, was replaced with a balding white man with a drinking problem. The calendar system was also returned to a "true" dating system (years, months, etc; instead of the original series' convention of time units like "centon" and "yahren") and each character was issued a full name, instead of being referred to by occasionally goofy single-word names like "Apollo", "Boomer", "Athena", "Greenbean", and so on.

Battlestar Galactica aired on Sci Fi Channel on Fridays until 2007, when it was announced that the show would be moving to a new timeslot Sundays at 10PM with the new series The Dresden Files as a lead-in. The show officially moved to the new Sunday timeslot with the premiere of Season 3.5 on January 21, 2007. Although the series was renewed for a fourth season during the upfront presentations, it was later announced on May 31, 2007, that the fourth season would be the last for the show. The fourth season will return to the original Fridays at 10PM slot.
